City Of San Diego Retains Federal Engineering For Public Safety Radio Consulting

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, August 5, 2011 — The City of San Diego, California has retained Federal Engineering, Inc. (FE) to assess the needs of its first responders and provide technical guidance for the enhancement and upgrade of the City’s public safety radio communications system. This program will include a review of existing documentation including the current system design, subsystem-level equipment documentation, and as-built drawings. Key to FE’s evaluation will be feedback from City technical and operations personnel regarding the overall system architecture and its associated elements.

“Federal Engineering was selected because of their unique knowledge of our public safety communications environment. The firm has been working with the County of San Diego since early 2010. With their assistance we can explore sharing assets with the County thereby reducing costs. In addition, interoperability between the City and County will improve,” indicated Mr. Darren Pudgil, Director of Communications to the Mayor.

Ronald F. Bosco, FE’s President provided an overview of the program: “FE will review the City’s 2002 Long-term Planning Documentation. We will interview first responders to determine both operational and technical needs. FE will conduct an assessment of existing systems including the City’s 800 MHz radio network, VHF conventional systems, mobile data network, and digital microwave network documenting their size, capacity, performance, and characteristics. FE will then evaluate the ability to leverage existing systems, facilities, and equipment for the implementation of the new Project 25 trunked communications infrastructure. FE will also identify reusable ancillary systems or equipment.”

Mr. Bosco continued: “FE will analyze previously proposed designs to assess radio coverage and determine if the new system will fill the existing coverage gaps. We will also determine if the proposed coverage is adequate for those City agencies that may potentially participate in both the 800 MHz and VHF bands. Upon completion of our analysis, FE will generate the City of San Diego Public Safety Radio Communications Strategic Plan and present the plan to the City and its stakeholders.”

FE provides a wide range of land mobile radio analysis, design, procurement support, and implementation management services for public safety, public service, transportation, and energy organizations. The firm also provides security analyses, disaster recovery planning, strategic assessments, product analyses, market research, and business planning services in telecommunications and related fields.

As a nationwide communications systems planning and design firm, Federal Engineering develops voice, data, and video networks for a wide range of end users, including organizations in the aerospace, energy, finance, education, publishing, and computer services fields. In addition to its private sector work, FE has completed thousands of communications projects for 30 state governments, as well as numerous local and federal government clients. FE’s certified independence ensures that clients receive objective, unbiased consulting services that are not influenced by any particular technology, product, vendor, or approach.
