Santa Barbara Chooses Federal Engineering to Support Public Safety Radio System Refresh

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, March 4, 2019 — The Santa Barbara, California County Board of Supervisors has unanimously chosen Federal Engineering, Inc. (FE) to develop technical specifications for a new emergency services radio system and manage the request for proposals process.

Mr. Carl Thornton, Communications Manager for the County said: “Santa Barbara is currently operating several land mobile radio systems using various technologies with different capabilities that are at the end of their useful lives. Some of these systems were installed in 1994 and are no longer supported by their manufacturers. The plan is to upgrade not only the mobile radio systems, but the microwave backbone system that supports the radio system. At the conclusion of this project, the County will retire the old UHF analog system and transition to a modern P25 digital system.”

Mr. Rajit Jhaver, Director at FE, stated: “Federal Engineering recently completed the first two phases of this important project: assessing the existing emergency radio system and providing recommendations for replacement systems. Developing the system technical specifications and assisting with the procurement represent the third and fourth phases of the project. The fifth phase will be system implementation. FE will apply our knowledge gained in over 1,000 projects and our experiences supporting the unique needs of first responders in California to bring Santa Barbara a practical, affordable system that can be implemented at minimal risk.”

Federal Engineering is a leading, nationwide firm providing analysis, design, procurement, and implementation support for NG911, PSAPs, ECCs, and EOCs. These services complement FE’s wide range of consulting services in public safety and public service communications involving LTE as well as traditional VHF, UHF, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, and 4.9GHz mobile radio systems.
