County of San Diego Awards Federal Engineering Contract to Assess VHF Mutual Aid Land Mobile Radio Systems

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, May 4, 2020 — The County of San Diego, Sheriff’s Department has awarded Federal Engineering, Inc. (FE) a technical support task order to analyze the San Diego Mutual Aid Zones Radio Systems.

Mr. Scott Wiggins, Senior Vice President of Federal Engineering said: “Working in conjunction with the extraordinary wildland fire agencies and the knowledgeable engineers at the County, FE will assess the users’ needs for the North, Central and East Mutual Aid Zones. FE will analyze the VHF land mobile radio systems in each Zone. We will also assess the regional microwave radio backhaul networks and make recommendations as to how to enhance backhaul connectivity to each Mutual Aid Zones repeater site. During this project, FE will identify user needs, conduct coverage, capacity, and interoperability analyses and deliver a conceptual design to improve redundancy and cross-Zone communications. This roadmap with be comprised of actionable recommendations for the replacement and/or upgrade of each of the radio systems.”

Mr. Wiggins continued: “As the project progresses, FE will provide the County with procurement support including development of technical specifications for inclusion in a request for proposals. We will attend vendor preproposal meetings, develop vendor proposal evaluation criteria, and assist in the review of vendor proposals. FE will also be available to attend vendor presentations.”

Mr. David Brooks, Communications Systems Manager for the County of San Diego, stated: “Federal Engineering has been providing public safety mobile radio consulting to the County for nearly a decade.
