New Hanover County Awards Federal Engineering Radio Narrowbanding Contract

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, September 12, 2011 — New Hanover County, North Carolina has awarded Federal Engineering (FE) a contract to conduct a narrowbanding assessment of the County’s existing public safety VHF communications systems.

Mr. Warren Lee, Director of Emergency Management for New Hanover County, stated: “For almost seven years now, Federal Engineering has been supporting the County in the modernization of our public safety mobile radio systems. Initially FE assisted in the analysis, design, procurement, and implementation of the County’s in 800 MHz public safety system. This successful program has significantly improved land mobile radio services for our first responders. FE continued to support the County as we rebanded our 800 MHz radio equipment. Most recently, New Hanover County has tasked FE to assess our VHF and UHF systems and determine the impacts of complying with the FCC narrowbanding mandates.”

Ronald F. Bosco, FE’s President, provided an overview of the project: “FE will conduct assessments of the existing County public safety VHF and UHF paging systems as well as the VHF and UHF mutual aid systems to determine the impacts and costs of narrowband migration. Site surveys will be conducted to verify the base station and pager equipment inventory as well as determine the condition of paging and mutual aid systems. FE will then develop a narrowbanding plan including:

  • Inventory assessment
  • Recommended process for the County to migrate subscriber and base station equipment
  • Budgetary cost estimates to upgrade base station equipment to narrowband operation

FE will also provide FCC narrowbanding licensing support before the narrowband implementation occurs.”

Federal Engineering provides a wide range of design and management services in public safety and public service involving VHF, UHF, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 4.9GHz communications systems. FE also assists in the design and implementation of E911, PSAPs, ECCs, and EOCs.

As a nationwide communications systems planning and design firm, Federal Engineering develops voice, data, and video networks for numerous firms including utilities, transportation, aerospace, energy, finance, education, publishing, and computer services. In addition to its private sector work, FE has completed over a thousand communications projects for 30 state governments, as well as numerous local and federal government clients. FE’s certified independence ensures that clients receive objective, unbiased consulting services that are not influenced by any particular technology, product, vendor, or approach.
