Federal Engineering Selected By Iowa Department Of Corrections For Radio System Consulting Services

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, December 19, 2012 — the Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) has selected Federal Engineering, Inc. (FE) to provide land mobile radio consulting for the modernization of its wireless communications systems at 17 locations across the state. FE will provide assistance to the DOC by drafting the technical specifications and requirements of an RFP for the acquisition of radios and radio networking for use within its prison facilities.

Ronald F. Bosco, FE’s President provided an overview: “The DOC is in the process of becoming narrowband compliant across 9 correctional facilities and 8 community based corrections district (CBC) locations as required by the Federal Communications Commission. Due to federal and legislative requirements, equipment age, parts availability and manufacturer support, it has become necessary to replace handheld radios, mobile radios, base stations, and auxiliary equipment. Currently, correctional and CBC locations are using a mix of VHF, UHF, and 800 MHz radio systems hampering interoperability. FE will develop a plan to migrate all DOC facilities and CBC locations to the 700 MHz public safety frequency spectrum. This will allow for the sharing of information, data exchange and resource sharing as well as public safety interoperability across the state of Iowa. FE will generate P-25 standards-based technical specifications and RFP requirements that are compliant with the FCC narrowbanding mandate and will provide maximum statewide radio coverage and interoperability.”

Mr. Bradly Hier, Deputy Director of Administration said: “Federal Engineering has been providing land mobile radio consulting to the State since 2008. We selected FE because of the firm’s superior proposal, reputation in the industry and demonstrated experience in all the requisite technologies. FE has intimate knowledge of our unique needs and circumstances which will prove invaluable considering the geographic diversity of our facilities.”

Federal Engineering provides a wide range of design and management services in public safety and public service involving LTE as well as traditional VHF, UHF, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 4.9GHz mobile radio systems. FE also assists in the design and implementation of E911, PSAPs, ECCs, and EOCs.

As a nationwide communications systems planning and design firm, Federal Engineering develops voice, data, and video networks for numerous firms including utilities, transportation, aerospace, energy, finance, education, publishing, and computer services. In addition to its private sector work, FE has completed over a thousand communications projects for 40 state governments, as well as numerous local and federal government clients. FE’s certified independence ensures that clients receive objective, unbiased consulting services that are not influenced by any particular technology, product, vendor, or approach.
