Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911) is the evolving phase of the ever-changing 911 infrastructure in the United States. As technology has advanced beyond voice to include text, data, images, and video, so must Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). In order to accommodate these additional services, upgrades to the PSAPs and respective networks are required.
NG911 will change how emergency calls are handled at a PSAP as well as by first responders, necessitating modifications to local and national 911 call handling policies and practices. New NG911 services will allow calls, messages, and data to be transferred to another PSAP anywhere within an interconnected NG911 ecosystem. This will facilitate more effective disaster management among PSAPs, EOCs, DHS, and other emergency management entities.
